Groundbreaking Science Denied / Paranormal Hotspots

About the show

In the first half, author and science correspondent Matt Kaplan highlighted a recurring theme in history: groundbreaking scientists often face opposition from their peers and society despite being correct. Kaplan recounted the story of Ignaz Semmelweis, a 19th-century obstetrician who discovered that hand sanitation drastically reduced maternal deaths from puerperal fever. Despite clear evidence, Semmelweis was rejected by the medical establishment and ultimately institutionalized. "Doctors, they were all gentlemen... and they said, 'Sir, how dare you tell us our hands are dirty,'" Kaplan explained.

He contrasted the quiet perseverance of Joseph Lister, who pioneered antiseptic surgical techniques but was silenced for over two decades due to professional jealousy, with the controversial legacy of Louis Pasteur. Kaplan revealed that Pasteur committed scientific fraud by plagiarizing vaccine research from other scientists and suppressing evidence of failures—a revelation that challenges the heroic narrative surrounding Pasteur. The conversation then turned to George Washington's strategic use of smallpox inoculation during the Revolutionary War. In the face of opposition from the Continental Congress, Washington vaccinated his troops, significantly reducing mortality and contributing to America's victory. "[Congress was] too worried about losing troops to inoculation, and George Washington defied orders to do it," Kaplan stated.

Regarding controversial claims, he noted that "science is supposed to argue with itself... but many people don't know that, and I think that's caused a lot of folks to say, 'Oh my God, is this how science actually works?'"

In the second half, specialized investigator Greg Lawson discussed his unique career bridging police work and paranormal investigation. Lawson's background includes roles as an aquatic death investigator, mental health officer, SWAT officer, and homicide detective. Beyond his badge, he has explored paranormal hotspots globally. His interest in the paranormal began in childhood through urban exploration with his older brother, evolving into a lifelong pursuit. Lawson emphasized the importance of separating his law enforcement duties from paranormal interests to maintain credibility, explaining, "You have to be very careful… you really have to sever those ties on either side."

As a mental health officer, Lawson has encountered numerous alien abduction and possession cases, which he approached with professional rigor. "Our contemporary knowledge of medicine... does not mean they did not experience what they're explaining to you," he insisted. He also revealed how his military service, including time aboard the USS Nimitz, sparked his fascination with aerial phenomena. Lawson described radar tracks of objects moving at impossible speeds and maneuvers. "This wasn't a weather phenomenon," he stated. "This was a physical craft... behaving much differently than regular aircraft."

Among his most compelling paranormal cases was an investigation at Leap Castle in Ireland, reputedly haunted with documented history of possession and murder. Despite no immediate evidence during the visit, a photo taken later revealed the image of a priest in a window. Lawson's investigative approach is pragmatic and evidence-driven. He doesn't seek to debunk, but says, "If the evidence is something naturally occurring, it's not paranormal, and you need to own that." He also questioned the applicability of the scientific method to paranormal phenomena, given their elusive, non-repeatable nature.
