Deaths & Disappearances of Scientists / Life of Houdini

About the show

In the first half, filmmaker Dean Alioto discussed the unsettling phenomenon of 13 scientists and researchers who have either disappeared or died under mysterious circumstances since 2024. Alioto traced the origins of the story to early 2025 and highlighted the involvement of multiple federal agencies —including the FBI, Department of Energy, Department of Defense, NASA, and even the White House— in investigating these cases. The victims, scattered across the United States and primarily linked to sensitive scientific and military research, include notable figures such as Carl Grillmair, a retired Caltech astrophysicist shot outside his home, and Joshua LeBlanc, a NASA engineer found dead in a car crash. Alioto revealed that most of the cases involve deaths rather than disappearances, with five individuals currently missing.

Alioto also addressed the potential connection to UFO disclosure, citing the case of Matthew James Sullivan, a former Air Force Intelligence Officer and federal UAP whistleblower who committed suicide prior to testifying about classified UFO programs. Sullivan's death added a troubling dimension to the narrative, with Alioto noting, "He was prepping to provide testimony to Congress regarding a secret government 'crash retrieval' program." Perhaps the most prominent name on the list is William Neil McCasland, a retired Air Force Major General and former commander of the Air Force Research Laboratory, who has been missing since February when he disappeared from his home in Albuquerque. "That's the one that kicked off this online sleuthing that went viral," Alioto commented.

The conversation touched on the impact and status of the victims, including those from a few years earlier. While some, like Amy Eskridge, a co-founder of the Institute for Exotic Science, were involved in fringe research, many were connected to government projects at institutions like JPL and MIT. Eskridge's 2022 death was officially ruled self-inflicted, but her own texts contradicted that conclusion, raising further questions. Alioto emphasized that these individuals were not isolated in their work but collaborated within broader teams.

In the latter half, C2C's investigative reporter Cheryll Jones presented her interview with author and 'weird historian' Marc Hartzman on the life and legacy of the great escape artist and magician Harry Houdini. He explored Houdini's groundbreaking feats as well as his resolute crusade against fraudulent spiritualism. Hartzman described Houdini as "a living superhero" who pushed "the boundaries of what the human body was capable of," captivating audiences with death-defying escapes like the Chinese Water Torture Cell. Houdini's obsessive physical training enabled him to hold his breath for over three minutes and master escapes from police handcuffs and jail cells, creating unparalleled drama and tension that made him a media sensation in the early 1900s.

Beyond his stage persona, Houdini was a devoted husband and son, deeply affected by his mother's death. This personal loss fueled his later obsession with exposing fake mediums exploiting grieving families. Hartzman recounted Houdini's efforts to debunk the Boston medium "Marjorie" (Mina Crandon), who claimed to communicate with her deceased brother, Walter. Houdini's meticulous investigations revealed subtle trickery, including muscle movements to produce supernatural effects.

The controversy escalated when a carpenter's ruler was mysteriously found in Marjorie's spirit box —a prop Houdini's assistant later admitted was planted to discredit her. Marjorie's spirit contact, Walter, allegedly cursed Houdini, predicting his doom. Remarkably, Houdini died just two years later in 1926 at age 52, a death linked by some to this supernatural vendetta. Hartzman also touched on the tension between Houdini and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a spiritualist advocate whose wife was a medium, and claimed to communicate with Houdini's deceased mother.

During the last half-hour, George featured a replay from 2011 with author Brad Steiger discussing alien mysteries.
